Miguel Cabrera Denies Tigers Stole Signs From White Sox

Apr 29, 2021 8:06 AM

Miguel Cabrera is denying allegations that the Detroit Tigers stole signs against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Cabrera took offense when White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal was trying to tell Lucas Giolito and Yasmani Grandal that the Tigers were passing signs. Cabrera made motions and said something toward Madrigal during the sixth inning, with Robbie Grossman on second and two outs in a then one-run game.

"I mean, c'mon, I don't play that game," said Cabrera. "You need to [show] respect, you know? You don't need to show up me, or the runner on second, try to say we're passing signs from second. Come on. I don't care why they do it, but they need to stop because we don't play that game; that's why I said something to him right away."

Fenway Park To Host High School Graduations

Apr 29, 2021 8:01 AM

Fenway Park will host a series of high school graduations in June.

From June 7 to June 21, Fenway Park will serve as the venue for 15 of the 38 graduating classes across the Boston Public Schools system. The Red Sox offered Fenway to all 38 schools, but many had already secured other outdoor venues across the city.

The Red Sox are home from June 8 through June 14. On those game days, the graduation ceremonies will be held in the morning, leaving time to clear the park for night games. Students and parents will sit in the outfield bleacher seats and up to four ceremonies a day will be held.

Francisco Lindor Shrugs Off Boos: 'I Get It'

Apr 29, 2021 7:57 AM

Francisco Lindor has started drawing boos at Citi Field just a few weeks after agreeing to a $341 million contract with the New York Mets.

The shortstop is hitting just .203 with three RBI through 19 games.

"It's interesting and it's funny, and it sucks," Lindor said. "It doesn't feel right, for sure. Interesting because it's the first time that it happened in my career. And funny because I'm getting booed and people think I'm going to go home and just think, oh, why am I getting booed? I get it. They're booing because there's no results. That's it.

"They expect results, I expect results and I get it, you know? It's part of the job. People expect results, and they're booing because there are no results. I just hope they cheer and jump on the field when I start hitting home runs and start helping the team on a daily basis a lot more than I'm doing right now."

Rob Manfred 'Optimistic' MLB, MLBPA Can Avoid Work Stoppage

May 3, 2021 7:59 AM

Major League Baseball's current collective bargaining agreement will expire on December 1 and Rob Manfred is optimistic that a work stoppage can be avoided.

Negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA have been acrimonious the last 13 months.

Despite that, Rob Manfred is "optimistic" baseball will be able to avoid a work stoppage after the 2021 season.

"I believe -- I really am optimistic -- that the process will work here," Manfred said.

The two sides recently held their first collective bargaining session. The Chicago Cubs' Ian Happ told reporters the two sides are early in the process of explaining where they stand, and no proposals have been made yet.

MLB: 70 Percent Of Players, Staff Began Vaccination

Apr 28, 2021 7:54 AM

Major League Baseball says 70% of players, on-field staff and support personnel have been fully or partially vaccinated for the coronavirus.

Rob Manfred made the announcement during SporticoLive's online discussion of its estimates to baseball franchise valuations on Tuesday.

"I think we're around 70%. The clubs have worked really hard with their players," Manfred said. "We're continuing to press to try to get everybody up above that kind of 85[%] number that we think is so important."

MLB told players on March 29 that COVID-19 protocol restrictions would be relaxed when 85% of Tier 1 personnel are vaccinated.

Giants Acquire Mike Tauchman In Trade With Yankees

Apr 28, 2021 7:46 AM

The San Francisco Giants have acquired Mike Tauchman from the New York Yankees for reliever Wandy Peralta and a player to be named later.

Tauchman, 30, a veteran of five major league seasons, had a breakout year for the Yankees in 2019 when he set career bests with a .277 average, 13 home runs and 47 RBIs.

With Clint Frazier and Brett Gardner splitting time in left field, there was little opportunity for Tauchman to find a spot in the Yankees' lineup.

Peralta, 29, is 2-1 with two saves and a 5.40 ERA in 8 1/3 innings over 10 appearances this season.

Shohei Ohtani Makes History As Pitcher Leading MLB In Home Runs

Apr 27, 2021 8:46 AM

Shohei Ohtani made Major League history when he took the mound for the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

He became the first player in nearly 100 years to start a game while also entering the day leading baseball in home runs.

Ohtani struck out nine over five innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. He picked up his first win since May 20, 2018 in the Angels' 9-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

"That was a pretty complete game of baseball," Joe Maddon said. "I had to put the hold sign on him. He wanted to steal, too. The first inning was a bit rugged, finding his command and [Nate] Lowe grabbed one off him. Otherwise, he would’ve given up zero or one at the most. He kept getting better, that’s what he does. On offense, he did everything, including bunting for a hit. If you weren’t entertained watching him tonight, you can’t be entertained by the game of baseball."

Ohtani entered his start as a pitcher as the MLB co-leader in home runs as a hitter with seven. The last player to do so was Babe Ruth, who was the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees on June 13, 1921 while also leading baseball with 19 home runs.
